Problems:
Causes & SolutionsProblem: ADASHI installer or ADASHI program gets an error message similar to "The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications, choose close to terminate the application" which may be followed by other errors such as "1607: Unable to install Installshield runtime" or "1628: Failed to complete installation" Cause: A program other than ADASHI has modified, removed, or corrupted the Windows system files autoexec.nt or config.nt, thus preventing Installshield from running properly, since it relies on these files. Confirmed causes for this problem have been viruses, spyware and occasionally it can come from installing Windows XP Service Pack 2. Solution: Restore copies of these files from the location where Windows keeps backups.
For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Item 324767. Problem: ADASHI trial installer gets an error Symptom description: When a user clicks the download link in a trial e-mail, they select 'Open' from the download prompt instead of 'Save'. This causes an error during installation and all future installation attempts. Cause: This error was caused by selecting 'Open' after clicking the download link rather than 'Save As'. The reason for this is that there is a difference in how Windows handles running programs like this. It dates back to an old Microsoft bug. This is why we explicitly tell users to click 'Save' instead of 'Open'. The reason it happened the second time is that the Windows installer uses a temp folder to extract to and install from. Clicking 'Open' the first time filled that temp folder with the incorrect data. Now when you save it and run manually, it still uses that same folder and the bad data is still there producing the same error. Solution: The only solution is to delete the temp directory that contains the bad data. This can either be in C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Local Settings\Temp or C:\Windows\Temp and it will have its own sub folder labeled something like _ISTMP#.DIR or something starting with IS. To be safe, reboot the system to clear any possible temp files out of memory then delete all folders you find matching that criteria in both locations. Additionally, the temp folder in Documents and Settings is a Hidden folder, so if the user can not see it initially, they must open Windows Explorer and go into Tools > Folder Options > View and turn on "Show hidden files and folders" Problem: Server unavailable when downloading maps Symptom description: The program installs but the maps don’t install and an error message of “server unavailable” is received. Cause: The server is temporarily unavailable due to heavy load or an internet related glitch. Solution: Finish installation without maps. Run ADASHI First Response, click Help and select Download Map files. If the problem persists for more than a few minutes, check that your internet connectivity is working normally and, if it is, contact ADASHI Technical Support. Problem: When user runs it, ADASHI gives an error of "Copy protection reports that files are missing" or something similar Cause: The copy protection software used by ADASHI has a timing issue where it looks for its files too quickly before Microsoft Windows can create them. It usually occurs when the user runs ADASHI with many other processes running or when they first boot their PC and it is operating slower then usual as it is still loading the operating system components. Solution: Dismiss the window, wait a minute or two and try running it again. If you have a lot of other software programs running, try closing some programs and then running ADASHI again. If the problem persists more than three times in a row, please contact ADASHI Technical Support. Problem: ADASHI installer gets a "shell.dll is corrupt or missing" error Cause: SHELL.DLL is an important Windows System file. If this file is missing or corrupted, then this is due to a prior or ongoing virus or spyware infestation. Solution: While we are not able to assist with the Windows Operating System we would suggest running a full virus scan and make sure you have the latest virus definition files installed. You may also wish to run some good Spyware detection software that detects and removes trojans. Even if this file IS found in your System, usually its size has been altered or corrupted by the virus. Therefore, replacement with a fresh copy would be necessary. Instructions for replacing shell.dll from a Windows CD: You can extract individual files from the cabinet files to replace missing or corrupted files. To extract information from a .cab file in Windows XP:
Example: expand d:\i386\shell.dl_ c:\Windows\system\shell.dll Expanding or copying the shell.dll file into the c:\windows\system and c:\windows\system32 directories seems to solve the error message for most users, unless virus/spyware removal tools have removed shell.dll's registry entry. Then the only recourse is a reinstall of Windows. Problem: Popup window during ADASHI installation after moving to CD 2 section of setup that says something similar to "Wrong Volume in drive. Please insert the correct volume and click Continue" Cause: Installshield bug usually caused by compatibility issues between Installshield and certain types of CD burning software, specifically ones that let you mount a CD image as a virtual drive such as Alcohol 120%, Damon Tools, VirtualDrive, etc. Solution: In most cases, the installation progress bar will continue in the background even though this error message stays up on the screen. If that is the case, allow installation to complete, click the Finish button on the main install window that comes up, then attempt to click Continue on the error message. When it pops up again, insert ADASHI CD 1 and click Continue again. This should dismiss the message, completing the install, and you can then run ADASHI normally. Problem: The ADASHI First Response trial version installer gets a "407 Proxy Authentication Required" error message. Symptom description: This occurs when the installation program tries to download map files. Cause: This is caused by a special internet configuration at the user's site called a Proxy Server. This server monitors all web traffic going out of the user's network. The user's programs that use the web all must be configured to authenticate through the proxy server before it will let them talk to the web. ADASHI does not have a configuration for this and should use the default Windows proxy configuration. Solution: There are several ways to solve or work around this issue.
Problem: After selecting a tank hazard source and setting the area of leak opening, the setting inadvertently changes to an incorrect value. Cause: This bug can only be found in version 2.2.0.17, and affects Spherical Tank, Horizontal Tank, and Vertical Tank source descriptions. An error in the source description form incorrectly converts all values entered into the “Area of Opening” field into square feet. Solution: A patch is available and can be downloaded here. Problem: GPS COM port configuration is reset to a blank field after location is obtained. Cause: This is caused by a software glitch. Solution: This will be fixed in the next version of ADASHI First Response. For now, you must manually re-set the COM port value in your Preferences whenever you want to get a new location with your GPS device. Problem: After starting ADASHI First Response, user receives a “Registration Exception Error” and the program does not load. Further information may be provided, such as “System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for “lh” threw an exception. ---> System.ArithmeticException: Overflow or underflow in the arithmetic operation.” This installation may also have been plagued with registration issues. Cause: Some older programs may not be compatible with Microsoft’s .NET environment. Since ADASHI was built around .NET it may fail if these programs are running at the same time. This issue is described in Microsoft’s Knowledgebase. Solution: At this time only one program has been identified as possibly being incompatible with ADASHI First Response. Versions of RemotePoint RF from or before the year 2001 may cause this issue in ADASHI. Please update your driver by going to the Interlink website or by downloading the new software. Problem: I installed the trial and every time the program starts up it tells me how many days I have left to run the trial before it expires – which I expect. However, the number of days never decrements. Cause: A glitch in the code is not properly updating the window that notifies users the number of days left in the trial. Solution: The glitch exists only in reporting the correct number of trial days left – the program WILL cease to operate after this time period has elapsed even though the reported number of days left has not changed. This bug will be fixed in the next version of ADASHI. |
